Forklift Safety Checklist for UAE Warehouses

Forklifts are among the most useful — and most dangerous — machines in any warehouse. A single moment of inattention can injure an operator, a pedestrian, or write off stock and racking. Most incidents, though, are preventable. This forklift safety checklist brings the essentials into one place: what to check before a shift, how to operate safely, and how planned maintenance keeps machines safe over the long run. Use it as a starting point and adapt it to your own site and equipment.

Before every shift: the pre-operation check

A quick, disciplined inspection at the start of each shift catches most developing faults before they become failures. Walk around the machine and check:

• Tyres — condition, pressure (pneumatic), and no chunks or splits.
• Forks — no cracks, bends, or excessive wear; heel thickness within limits; locking pins in place.
• Mast, chains, and hoses — even chain tension, no frays, no visible hydraulic leaks.
• Brakes, steering, and horn — all responding correctly.
• Lights, beacon, and reversing alarm — working, especially for indoor and mixed-traffic areas.
• Seatbelt and operator restraint — present and functional.
• Battery or fuel — charge/level adequate; no damage, corrosion, or leaks.
• Data plate and attachments — capacity plate legible; any attachment rated and fitted correctly.

Log the check and report any defect immediately. A machine that fails inspection should be tagged out of service until it’s fixed — not “run until it breaks.”

Safe operating practices

• Only trained, authorised operators use the forklift.
• Wear the seatbelt at all times, even for short moves.
• Keep to site speed limits and slow right down at corners, junctions, doorways, and ramps.
• Sound the horn at blind spots and intersections.
• Travel with the forks low (about 10–15 cm off the ground) and tilted back.
• Travel in reverse when a raised load blocks your view.
• Never carry passengers or lift people on the forks — use a proper work platform.
• Keep arms, legs, and head inside the operator compartment.

Load handling

• Never exceed the truck’s rated capacity — and remember capacity drops as lift height and load centre increase.
• Check the load is stable, centred, and secure before lifting.
• Insert the forks fully under the load and spread them to suit the pallet.
• Lift, lower, and tilt smoothly — no sudden movements.
• Only raise or lower a load when stationary.
• Watch for overhead obstructions — racking, sprinklers, doorways, and cables.

Pedestrians and site safety

Most serious forklift incidents involve people on foot. Separate them from trucks wherever you can:

• Mark pedestrian walkways and enforce them.
• Use barriers, mirrors, and signage at blind corners and doors.
• Make eye contact with pedestrians before moving near them.
• Keep a safe distance from other trucks and never operate under a raised load.
• Ensure good lighting and keep floors clear of spills and debris.

Battery and refuelling safety

• Charge electric forklift batteries in a ventilated area, away from ignition sources.
• Wear appropriate PPE when handling batteries and check for damage or leaks.
• Refuel diesel and LPG trucks in designated areas with the engine off.
• Keep chargers, cables, and connectors in good condition and report any damage.
